Distribution - China, Shanxi province.
Description – A medium sized evergreen species related to E. davidii, fangii, flavum and hunanense.
Its leaves consist of three narrow leaflets with very spiny margins. The medium sized yellow flowers are of hanging ‘spider’ type.
With us it seems reasonably reliable and long lived but occasionally slow to get going. Until a few very recent introductions, this was a very distinct and easily recognised species, by the foliage alone.
It has short rhizomes and therefore a fairly compact habit. We would recommend it as an attractive addition to a woodland garden or Epimedium collection.
